On September 12 2024, Finland hosted an online session dedicated to the country’s evolving transport data ecosystem, stressing the role of interfaces and APIs in logistics. The event, attended by professionals from the Finnish transport and logistics sectors, offered a clear overview of current innovations and the ongoing development of the Electronic Freight Transport Information (eFTI) system.

During the session, Teemu Heikura from Fintraffic provided a concise yet insightful update on the status of eFTI. With the Regulation scheduled to come into effect in June 2027, European authorities are expected to be ready to handle electronic freight documents by then, though its use by industry operators will not yet be mandatory at that stage. There is, however, ongoing discussion about making its adoption compulsory around 2030.

The current state of eFTI implementation was also mentioned, with the first regulatory steps for Competent Authorities already published on the European Commission”’s “Have your say” portal, alongside the delegated regulation for eFTI (see also our update on this subject here).

In conclusion, the session gave the audience an update on the progresses of the eFTI4EU Pilots in Finland, and explained how eFTI platforms are being developed. The event provided a comprehensive and up-to-date view of the state of the art of eFTI in Finland and beyond, engaging in a very positive discussion with the business community present at the meeting.
