A major milestone for the implementation of eFTI has been reached. On 9 January 2025, the first Implementing and Delegated Acts under the eFTI Regulation officially entered into force. This marks a significant step forward in the path towards fully digital freight transport across the EU. As communicated by the European Commission with this recent press release, these acts provide crucial implementation specifications, allowing Member States to begin developing their IT systems to prepare for the upcoming milestones of the eFTI framework.

Next Steps for eFTI Implementation

With the supporting acts now in place, here is what lies ahead for eFTI:

  • From January 2025: Member States can start setting up the IT infrastructure needed to handle eFTI-compliant transport information.
  • By September 2025 :the European Commission plans to finalize additional specifications, detailing the technical and functional requirements for IT systems, and the certification framework for eFTI platforms and service providers.
  • As of January 2026: eFTI platforms and service providers can prepare for operations, with authorities starting to accept electronic freight transport data stored on certified platforms.
  • From 9 July 2027: full application of the eFTI Regulation begins. All EU Member States will be required to accept digital freight information via certified platforms.

This milestone highlights the collaborative efforts of the eFTI community and sets the tone for the ongoing transformation of freight transport.
