On 13 May 2026, eFTI4EU project partner IMT – Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes hosted an Open Day in Lisbon dedicated to the implementation of the eFTI Regulation and the digitalisation of freight transport across Europe. The event took place following the sixth eFTI4EU Consortium Meeting, which brought project partners together in the Portuguese capital.
Held at the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC), the Open Day brought together representatives from public authorities, European institutions, industry stakeholders and technical experts to discuss the transition towards electronic freight transport information and the next steps towards full implementation by July 2027.
The Open Day offered participants a comprehensive overview of the opportunities and challenges linked to the adoption of eFTI, including discussions on interoperability, data exchange, enforcement procedures and the role of digitalisation in improving efficiency and sustainability across the logistics sector. Experts from the European Commission and the eFTI community highlighted how the transition from paper-based documentation to structured, machine-readable data can significantly reduce administrative burden and roadside inspection times, while supporting more transparent and sustainable transport operations across Europe.

The event also showcased concrete implementation activities currently underway in Portugal within the framework of the eFTI4EU and eFTI4ALL projects, including the development of the national eFTI access point, expected to become operational in the near future. IMT further presented the results of interoperability tests carried out with Italy using real operational data provided by logistics company Luís Simões, demonstrating the practical potential of cross-border electronic freight information exchange.
Participants had the opportunity to attend live demonstrations of digital systems, exchange views during interactive discussions and roundtables, and explore sector-specific perspectives.

The event further confirmed Portugal’s active role in supporting the implementation of the eFTI Regulation at European level and strengthening cooperation with other Member States involved in the eFTI ecosystem.
As highlighted during the discussions, the next phase will include real-world pilot activities involving enforcement authorities, contributing to the testing and validation of eFTI solutions in operational contexts and supporting the broader deployment of digital freight transport information systems across Europe.
